Antong Coffee Mill, Taiping|A Sip of Charcoal Aroma and a Slice of Sun Yat Sen History
In Taiping, Perak, there is an Antong Coffee Mill, a long-established coffee factory that has been in business for more than 80 years. The most traditional production method is preserved here, and coffee beans are still roasted over charcoal. When you walk into the factory, you can smell the rich scent of charcoal and coffee intertwined, giving people the illusion of going back to the old days in an instant.
The third-generation descendant, Mr. Cheng Wenzhong, said that although modern equipment can save time and cost, only charcoal baking can retain the rich aroma and ancient taste. This is the craftsmanship and persistence left by the ancestors.
Just next to the coffee factory, there is a building with a longer history-"Changchun Garden". This is one of the former homes of Mr. Sun Yat-sen when he went to Nanyang. His wife, Chen Suifen, lived here for 17 years. Back then, it was not only a residence, but also an important stronghold to promote the anti-Qing revolution. Today's "Changchun Garden" has become the office of Andong Coffee Factory, and old photos and historical documents of the year are still hung on the walls, as if telling about the turbulent years.
Here, you can not only taste a cup of fragrant charcoal coffee, but also feel the struggle and historical imprint of the Malayan Chinese in the fragrance of the coffee.
